Marriage and Family Therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and married couples. It is about talking and helping each other create an atmosphere of love and support inside the family. It is a known fact that if a family is in shambles, then the community is affected. There are elements in a relationship that should always be present such as love, trust and intimacy. If one is not present, then chances are peace inside the home is not present as well.
Therapists give more emphasis on problem-solving rather that on the causes of the problem. “Blame” is not the focus of marriage and family therapy sessions. Interest is generally on what goes on between the members of the family, relationship-wise, rather than on the individual person. This form of therapy recognizes that it does not matter if the issue is perceived to be individual or family-related and that the involvement of the family in coming up with a solution is highly beneficial. This can be achieved by direct participation bye the members of the family in the therapy sessions. Therapy is also considered to be more effective in treating a variety of problems including depression, marital issues, anxiety, individual psychological problems, and child-parent concerns.
Families need to nurture change and development, and consider itself as the most important factor and influence in the psychological health and well-being of a person. Relationship in the family has to be stable, long-term and emotionally enriching. When relationship problems, mental and emotional disorders occur within the family, the intervention of marriage and family therapy is needed.
