The first step to winning is choosing the right tournament. There are a few different kinds of tournaments and each one is suited to a different kind of player. Standard tournaments are probably the best for an average poker player. These tournaments only allow 1 buy-in and usually pay the top 20% of players. It is very important to choose a tournament that you can afford. The next type is re-buy tournaments. These can be quite expensive as they allow players to rebuy when they run out of chips for the first hour. You can also buy an add-on at the first break. These tournaments are touch to win and should only be played if you have a bankroll of at least 10 times the amount of the buy-in.

Tournaments at Poker Stars usually start off pretty wild. It is best to avoid all but the best hands while the players that want to go all in very quick either double up and play normal or get knocked out. You should play extremely tight for the first 30 minutes of every tournament.

Always use the notes feature when you play in a tournament. If another player likes to bluff on the flop make a note of it because you never know who you are going to end up against at the final table. This was you can easy build a little database of players and how they play which couple be very useful in tournaments down the road.

When you are getting closer to the prize pool you will have to make a decision. You can either play very tight so you can at least wait it out to guarantee that you win something or you can go for the gold. If you choose the latter you can rack up a lot of chips pretty quickly by steal blinds. Players tend to no risk it so they at least win something, no one likes to get knocked out a few positions away from the prize pool.
Poker Stars Tournament Tip #5
When you are at the final table you will need to make another decision. Every player that gets knocked out before increases the minimum win a lot. Unless you have a dominating chip lead it is best to play tight until there are only 5 players remaining. Then you can either go for the win or hope to make it a few more places.
