British are very fond of camping and rate it highly for time passing needs. Ask any UK national about their favorite place for camping and invariably most of them will single out Devon any day. Devon boasts of over 150 camping sites and it is rare for one to not succeed in finding his/her favorite spot.

Most of these camping sites surround the major cities, however, once you go further down the countryside, there are several other breathtaking camping spots readily available.

If you are crazy about hiking and always looked for a camping location that could provide you the best of both camping and hiking then Dartmoor National park should not missed while going camping in Devon. This park situated around 213 miles southwest of London and 13 miles in the west direction from Exeter features some very beautiful vistas, amazingly looking purple heather and many water sources. These all make great visits during your camping expedition.

If camping in Devon and that too in Dartmoor National park, you should be aware of the famous Dartmoor ponies that wander around the landscape freely and also the spiny shrubs that can turn harmful. Only the seasoned hikers are advised to venture around the landscape alone.

Another point that you must keep in mind while camping in Dartmoor National Park is that you must not pull your car off the road and into the park anywhere you like. Devon authorities suggest that you are allowed to sleep at night only in your vehicles and that too only at certain designated places in the park.

If you try to be too clever in this regard, you can be pulled-up by the park rangers or the local police for committing an offence. You may even be fined a steep $160 for violating the local ordinance.

In case you are a member of a caravan, you must keep in mind that Dartmoor roads are very steep and winding at places. The caravan members are prohibited to drive the caravan over couple of bridges in the park. These are the ones located on the Two Bridges Road and the Ashburton.

As regards the backpack camping, Devon authorities are more generous and unless you are trespassing into the privately owned stretches of land and causing some sort of pollution or damage to the area, they will allow you to enjoy your camping experience.

You must also take care that you are not camping within any walls, in sight of any dwellings or house, close to the farmlands, besides the road, anywhere close to the road or in any demarcated area that is included in the reservoir catchment system. It is advisable to refer a detailed map to be able to locate the best camping spot that causes no inconvenience to the locals or the police in Devon.
