Well I don't think the health risks with dogs is that bad but there are many things that can go wrong with your pet dog and many of these will also cost money if not lots of money to fix and make better.
Of course I could not tell you that everything will be fine when you receive your brand new puppy or dog, but with a lot of hype and worry floating around I do think everything is getting a bit out of proportion. Sure you'll have minor problems for sure like diarrhea and stomach upsets every now and again but every dog is likely to get this at one time or another but on the whole I would not take this into account too much when making a decision in my opinion.
Out of all the dogs I have owned I have never had a serious financial problem with caring for my dog. I may have been lucky some might say, and I do have dog insurance just in case which I think is a good idea whatever happens but I think if you care for your dog and spend time grooming, getting them to eat well, and cleaning teeth etc every now and again then I suspect they will do a lot better than if no attention is give, and I hold these reasons to be a big part of why I have little or no problems with my dogs.
You may think it goes without saying that you would do this anyway but it's surprising many people get lazy after the initial cute puppy stage. So my advice to you is to not worry too much about the health costs, and more about how much love you're wiling to give your pet. If they are happy and maintained well then the health problems will be a lot more manageable.
