Thrush is a form of yeast that is commonly found in the gastric tract. When the body defense becomes weak because of weakness in the body or immune deficiency, the yeast causes infection in the mouth called oral thrush. In the mouth it looks like creamy white patches or small red spots on the tongue, the roof of the mouth (also known as the hard palate), gums or throat. Thrush makes it difficult and painful to swallow and can cause chest pain as well as nausea and making food taste different.
Many women suffer from thrush, in fact it's been estimated that over 75% of all women will experience thrush, at some point in their lives. Fortunately there are many over the counter medicines that are effective natural cure for thrush or home remedies for thrush cure.
The first step in treatment will be to get rid of the yeast, and this is usually done with prescription antifungal medication in a form that can be sucked or as a liquid that is held in the mouth before swallowing. Medications that may be prescribed include nystatin (Mycostatin) and fluconazole (Diflucan).
The second step in thrush cure is to correct any condition that may have caused it. Dentures will need to be treated to destroy the fungus and ill-fitting dentures may need to be repaired or replaced. If the patient is diabetic, an adjustment may be needed in the diabetic medications that are being taken.
But aside from seeing a doctor and using over the counter medications, there are things you can do at home to treat thrush.
The common yogurt is a home treatment and natural cure for thrush. Eating lots of yogurt brings back the balance in good bacteria and thrush can be controlled. Aside from yogurt, another effective natural cure for thrush is Aloe Vera gel which can also be bought in alternative medicine and herb stores. Apply the Aloe Vera gel to the affected area.
Food is one of the main triggers of thrush. Avoid dried fruits, dairy products, mushrooms, pickled vegetables and fruits, monosodium glutamate and smoked fish and meat as these can trigger thrush. Avoiding food that contains yeast may also give relief. Foods containing a lot of yeast are bread, beer, wine, etc. Stopping tobacco usage will help. See your dentist regularly to also control the thrush. Talk to your doctor for your line of treatment.
